Ba Be lake and national park 3 days from Hanoi
The freshwater Ba Be lake is the only significant natural upland lake in the North of Vietnam. Ba Be lake is some 145m above sea level, 8 km long, 3 km wide and about 20-30m deep. The lake actually consists of three lakes called Pe Lam, Pe Lu and Pe Leng, and derives its name Ba Be (which in Vietnamese means Three Seas) from this. The Lake is surrounded by limestone mountains and thick forest, home to many species of rare birds and animals. You can take a dugout canoe to visit the lake, Puong Grotto with beautiful and diverse in forms stalagmites and stalactites and Dau Dang waterfall.
Day 1 : Hanoi - Thai Nguyen - Ba Be (L,D)
You will depart from Hanoi to Ba Be Lake, a mountainous area, which is nearly 250 km from Hanoi. Just to the suburbs of Hanoi, you can enjoy the views of the sprawling farm lands of the Red River Delta. Upon arrival in Thai Nguyen, you will visit the Museum of the Cultures of Vietnam Ethnic Groups. After visiting the Museum you will continue the drive to Ba Be, enjoying the stunning scenery and beautiful landscape on the way. You arrive to the entrance of Ba Be National Park in late afternoon – and from here we drive through the Park to a small village named Pac Ngoi, inhabited by Tay Minority. Here you stay overnight in a local stilt house.
Note: the Museum of Cultures of Vietnam Ethnic Groups is closed on every Monday.
Day 2 : Boat trip to Ba Be lake and walking in Ba Be national park (B,L,D)
The day starts with a walk to a small pier where you get on your motorboat and have a cruise on Ba Be Lake. The lush forest clinging to the surrounding mountains is your backdrop as you explore the lake. During the boat trip you will visit the Puong Grotto and the Dau Dang waterfall. The scenery surrounding the lake is simply breathtaking, with the huge, old forest dominating in this landscape. During the walk in the afternoon, you will be able to observe the local communities going about their daily life, which includes buffaloes and their owners tending the fields. By late afternoon you will return to your local Tay ethnic minority house, where you enjoy dinner and stay overnight tonight.
Day 3 : Ba Be – Hanoi (B,L)
Today you will say goodbye to the friendly villagers and take the drive back to Hanoi. You will have lunch in a local restaurant on the way and arrive back in Hanoi late in the afternoon.
